Syncing Movies of Your Experiment to Your Data
You can insert video recordings of your experiment into
experiment files. You can then synchronize the video to your data so
when the experiment is replayed, the data and video can be viewed
together.
You can capture
movies directly from a video input such as a digital video camera or
web camera.
In addition to following the procedure below, tutorials are
available to help you sync a movie to your data. Choose Open
from the File menu and look in Experiments
> Tutorials to find them.
Synchronizing a Movie with Your Data
Use this procedure to sync your data to your video of the
experiment. Note: If you are using imported data
that was collected with a calculator, not a computer, you must change
the name of one of the data columns. See below for more information.
- Choose Movie from the Insert menu, and select the
movie you want added to your page. Supported movie formats include .mp4, .mpg, and .mpeg files.
- Find a spot in the data that is easy to identify in the
movie, e.g., the time when a ball reaches the peak of a toss. There are
two ways this can be done:
- Move the mouse cursor over the graph and look at the
mouse coordinates in the lower left corner of the screen (as long as Mouse
Position and Delta is checked in the Graph Options
dialog).
- Use the examine
feature and scroll the mouse
across the graph. This method will give you a more precise time from
the data.
- Click the Sync button
to open the Movie
Synchronization dialog.
- Enter the time or click on the graph at the point that you
identified earlier as the Graph Time. Make sure you choose the correct Data
Set.
- Use the slider and the next frame/previous frame buttons to
find the frame in the movie that corresponds with the data point you
identified in the graph. Click OK.
- Choose Replay
from the Analyze menu to view the synchronized
movie and data.
Tips
- It is helpful to have the data-collection
rate an integer multiple of the video frame rate so that
there are sensor values corresponding to each frame.
- Double-click the movie or choose Movie Options from the Options menu to change the
properties of the movie including the playback rate.
- It is important to know that Logger Pro
simply links to your movie file. The movie is not merged into your
Logger Pro file. The movie is a separate file. If
the original movie file is deleted, it will be removed from the Logger Pro
file.
Additional Information for Data Imported from a Calculator
Perform this process only if you imported data from a TI
calculator. Data imported from a calculator have the time data in a
column that is labeled "L1," which must be renamed to "Time" before
attempting to synchronize the data to a movie.
- Choose Column Options > L1 from
the Data menu to open the Column Options dialog.
- Change the Column Name to Time. Then,
enter an appropriate Short Name and Unit (min, for example).
- Click Done. You can now perform the procedure above to sync
your data with your movie.
