Using the Function Generator

LabQuest is capable of putting out an analog output signal to the audio out connector (the miniature stereo phone plug located on the left side of LabQuest). The Function Generator produces sound on two channels from the internal speakers of the LabQuest or from any speakers connected to the audio out connector. You can use this feature to nicely demonstrate beats.

To set up the Function Generator, open the LabQuest sensor dialog by clicking the LabQuest icon in the toolbar or choosing Set Up Sensors > LabQuest from the Experiment menu.

Function Generator Options

In the Function Generator dialog, the following options are available to control the analog signal that is put out by LabQuest:

Left and Right Speakers

The Function Generator can produce sound on two channels, Left and Right. You can control the speakers independently, or you can Lock them.

Waveform

From the Waveform drop-down menu, select one of the following waveform types: Ramp Up, Ramp Down, Triangle, Square, or Sine. Click Start to turn on the channel. Note: The waveform will continue until you click Stop.

Frequency

LabQuest can produce frequencies between 0.25 Hz and 10,000 Hz. Adjust the frequency as needed for your experiment. Click X2 or ÷2 to double or halve the output frequency. This is useful for demonstrating resonance effects.
