Saving custom Terminal window settings

You can save custom Terminal window settings that you use frequently. These settings are saved as .term files and stored in XML format. The file you create saves only the window settings, not the contents of the window. When you double-click a saved file, Terminal opens a window with your custom settings.

  1. Choose Terminal > Window Settings, then click the Terminal window that you want to configure.
  2. Adjust the color, font, emulation, and other options in the Terminal Inspector. Each open Terminal window has its own settings. If you want new windows to use these settings, click "Use Settings as Defaults."
  3. Choose File > Save As and type a name for the settings file.
  4. Specify a location for the saved file (saving it to ~/Library/Application Support/Terminal places it in the Terminal library and makes it accessible from the File menu in Terminal).
  5. Choose one of the following options from the "What to save" pop-up menu:

Main Window saves only the window that's currently active.

All Windows saves all the currently open Terminal windows. (The next time you open this file you will see multiple Terminal windows with the same settings as the windows currently open.)

  6. If you want a window or windows with these settings to appear when you open Terminal, select "Open this file when Terminal starts up."
  7. Click Save.
