Changing the appearance of Terminal windows

You can change the size and color of Terminal windows to suit your needs. For example, if you have multiple windows open, you can easily distinguish between different operations by color-coding them. Or, you may find a particular combination of background color and text color easier to read.

If you need to keep your Terminal window visible, but also want to maximize the usable space on your desktop, you can even adjust the transparency of the Terminal window so only the text is visible and the Terminal window itself disappears.

You can also change the font style and size, the cursor style, and character set encoding to fully customize your working environment.

  1. Choose Terminal > Window Settings.
  2. Choose a setting (Display, Color, or Window) from the Terminal Inspector pop-up menu.
  3. Make the settings you want for your Terminal windows.
  4. Click "Use Settings as Defaults" if you want to preserve these settings as the default settings for all new Terminal windows.
