Export in GIS Format

Logger Pro can export data in a form recognized by most GIS software. The following information presents the basics for moving your data into ArcView and ArcExplorer Java Edition for Education (AEJEE), products of ESRI. For more general help with your GIS software, please refer to the Help in that program.

For ease of use once in your GIS software, you will want the following columns included in your Logger Pro data table. AEJEE users, please note that your column names should have no spaces or special characters and that they should not exceed nine characters.

Note: Latitude and longitude should be entered in the form of decimal degrees, (hdd.ddddd), not degrees, minutes, and seconds. If you are using a GPS to obtain these values, there is usually a way to set the units to this format. Also note that in most GIS software, longitudes in the Western Hemisphere are reported as negative values. Similarly, latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere are reported as negative values. For example, Vernier Software & Technology in Beaverton, OR, has a decimal degree latitude of 45.49354 and longitude of -122.82109.

Enter Data into Logger Pro

There are two recommended ways to enter data into Logger Pro for GIS export:

Manual Entry

One method is to simply type the data you have collected into a Logger Pro data table. A template called "GIS Manual Entry" can be found in the GIS (Geographic Info System) folder inside the Experiments folder.

Events with Entry

Another method is to collect data using Events with Entry mode. Three entries will be used, Site Number, Latitude, and Longitude. A template called "GIS Temp Event w Entry", created using Temperature as an example, can be found in the GIS (Geographic Info System) folder inside the Experiments folder.

Export Data from Logger Pro

When your Logger Pro data are ready, choose Export as > GIS format from the File menu. Select the location you would like to export to, give the file a name, and click Save. Your file is now saved in .txt format.

Add Data to ArcView 3.3

  1. Open your ArcView project.
  2. In the project window, click the Tables icon, and then click Add.
  3. In the Add Tables window, choose Delimited Text (*.txt) from the List Files of Type drop-down menu.
  4. Find your file, then click OK.
  5. Make the View window active and choose Add Event Theme from the View menu.
  6. The three options will probably be correctly identified for you. If not, identify your table, X, and Y coordinates.
  7. Click OK. ArcView adds a theme where each location in the table is represented by a point.

Add Data to AEJEE (ArcExplorer-Java Edition for Education)

  1. Open your AEJEE project.
  2. Choose Add Event Theme from the View menu.
  3. Navigate to your *.txt file.
  4. Select Long for the X field and Lat for the Y field.
  5. Click OK.
